Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, Hollywood legends, No Man of Her Own, video tribute

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard made a single film together, “No Man of Her Own” (1932). They were married in 1939, until Carole’s tragic death, in 1942, in a plane crash.

This is my tribute to one of the greatest couples in Hollywood’s Golden Era.

1937, Carole Lombard, Fredric March, Nothing Sacred, William Wellman

Nothing Sacred (1937), Carole Lombard, Fredric March

A nice comedy directed by William Wellman and produced by Selznick International Pictures, “Nothing Sacred” tells the story of a young woman who is supposedly poisoned with radium at her workplace. The press creates an entire campaign on her behalf, only later to be discovered that everything was a charade that was orchestrated by an influent journalist. “Nothing Sacred” isn’t the only film that depicts the great power of control and manipulation of the media, other newspaper Hollywood productions, such as “The Front Page”, “His Girl Friday”, “It Started One Night”, “Platinum Blonde”, “Bombshell”, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”, “Mr Deeds Goes to Town”, “Meet John Doe” and the masterpiece “Citizen Kane” reflecting the same idea. You will enjoy “Nothing Sacred” because of the stellar performances of Carole Lombard (an excellent comedienne) and Fredric March (one of the most renowned actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood), but also because it is made in the typical style of David O. Selznick, a very accomplished producer. I highly recommend you to watch this delightful comedy, even more because it was made in Technicolor and you will get to see Carole Lombard in full splendor in color!

Movie of the Week: My Man Godfrey (1936)

Carole Lombard, My Man Godfrey (1936), William Powell

Carole Lombard, William Powell, My Man Godfrey (1936)

“My Man Godfrey” is the only film in which the famous couple Carole Lombard-William Powell appeared together after their divorce. This motion picture became a cult film over the years, because of its witty, original screenplay, because of the magic performance of the effervescent Carole Lombard (who, tragically, died too young) and the superb and admirable portrayal of the wealthy pauper, played by the aristocratic William Powell. This story was repeated and imitated over and over again. A pauper who becomes a butler in the house of a wealthy family reveals by the end of the film that, in fact, he is, too, very wealthy and very intelligent; in other words, an accomplished businessman with many fine ideas. The costumes and sets in this wonderful comedy are also emblematic, and the direction of Gregory LaCava is an important asset. This is the reason why “My Man Godfrey”, the epitome of pure entertainment of the 30s and a high quality comedy in the old fashion (without being obsolete; on the contrary, it was and still is a very modern and crazy film), was nominated for six Academy Awards, for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Director, and Best Writing, Screenplay. All the actors are superb, including the supporting cast, and I would mention, among others, Alice Brady, Gail Patrick, Eugene Pallette, Jean Dixon, and Mischa Auer. So I suggest you not to miss “My Man Godfrey”, the perfect comedy of the 30s, an elegant and delightful period between the two World Wars.

Recomandarea săptămânii – No Man of Her Own (1932)

1932, Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, No Man of Her Own

Carole Lombard, Clark Gable
