Myrna Loy, William Powell, The Thin Man (1934)

The first of “The Thin Man” series, this MGM production of 1934 reunited Myrna Loy and William Powell, one of the golden couples in Hollywood. The actors appeared together in 14 movies, but the most famous of all are the “The Thin Man” movies. My recommendation for this week is the first of them, which was also the most successful. Myrna and William played Nick and Nora Charles, the famous detectives who were characters written by Dashiell Hammett. “The Thin Man” is the ideal film of the 1930s. High-spirited, glamorous, fascinating, enchanting, and full of entertaining moments. Crimes are solved in an ingenious, but also optimistic manner. It will make you smile and laugh, because “The Thin Man” is, above all, a comedy. You will get to see some famous stars as well, like Asta, the most popular dog in Hollywood, Maureen O’Sullivan (best-known for her leading role in the “Tarzan” movies) and Cesar Romero (the Latin matinee idol of that period). The film was nominated at four Oscar categories, for Best Actor in a Leading Role (William Powell, of course), Best Director (W. S. Van Dyke), Best Picture, and Best Writing, Adaptation. “The Thin Man” is so iconic even nowadays, that its magic remains flawless, even after over 75 years of existence. It was remade for the television version, but the original will always be the best. Owing to its enormous success, MGM decided to continue the story of Nick and Nora Charles with five more films made between 1935 and 1947, as follows: “After the Thin Man”, “Another Thin Man”, “Shadow of the Thin Man”, ” The Thin Man Goes Home” and “Song of the Thin Man”. Watch all these films because you will certainly get to admire Myrna Loy and William Powell, who are, without a doubt, the perfect couple that epitomizes the golden days of the old Hollywood.
